The North district runs three teams-of-eight leagues. These are open to all SBU-affiliated clubs in the district. Matches and their dates are set by mutual agreement at the Captain's meeting, held at the start of the season in late August. The season normally completes by the end of April.

The matches are played as four sets of six boards, with the home team moving round the tables and are aggregate scored, the aggregate difference at the end of the match being converted into VPs.

Substitutions by players not in the same team are permitted, subject to some restrictions and team Captains are permitted to add new players to their team pool during the course of the season. However, team Captains are encouraged to ensure they have a sufficient pool of players to draw on throughout the season.
